This
Education on Demand service provides a video distribution and delivery service
and interactive web-based lesson management along with the underlying network
and telecommunications provisioning to enable this service. The Education on Demand
service provides teachers with access to the central content library where an
extensive yet easily searchable virtual library of educational video content and
related teaching materials are available to support both classroom and individual
instruction. When teachers find titles of interest, they can preview the content
from the central library via the school network and then request that a replica
of the specific content title be distributed from the central library to the content
server at the specific school building. Lessons, video content and associated
tests are viewed in a full-screen, TV-quality experience from a PC either for
individual student use or via television delivery for group viewing. The Education
on Demand system provides the tool to create interactive distance learning programming
that can be hosted on the Media Server or at the Network Operations Center (NOC).
Key
features of the Education on Demand service are as follows:
-
Educational content, the Education on Demand portal and the learning applications
are stored and managed at central content libraries or hosting service providers
-
Replicas of the Education on Demand portal and the learning applications are stored
on each school's Media server
- Interactive
distance learning programs can be created
- From
a PC, teachers are able to order video content to enhance their lessons, construct
curriculums and lesson plans according to state requirements and teacher's individual
learning objectives;
Instructors
and curriculum developers are able to:
-
Play videos or video clips on demand that are ordered from the central library
and then stored for use on the server at their facility
- Produce
effective learning materials and with integrated testing to measure learning per
student
- Deliver
courses in the classroom or via distance learning
- Monitor
and manage each student's learning process
- Share
lesson plans and content with other instructors on the network
- Easily
and quickly integrate video content into lessons using the Education on Demand
portal.
This
service is comprised of the following 5 elements:
- Network.
The service includes satellite network bandwidth for distributing content and
for quickly accessing the Internet. Typically, the service is deployed with a
terrestrial WAN, providing virtual LAN connectivity between schools in a district
or country. This network is augmented by the satellite network, broadcasting video
and associated teaching content from an uplink at the network operations and hosting
center to satellite receivers at the schools. Bandwidth on this network will be
provisioned to support the aggregate usage, and wi1l initially be configured for
3 Mbps.
- Network
Operations Center, a) providing overall network management and control, b) hosting
web servers for the content, c) hosting the Education on Demand video portal and
web-based lesson management tool suite.
- On-premises
equipment that receives the satellite broadcast interfaces with the WAN, stores
the video content and then re-serves it over the WAN to the end users.
- Installation,
support, and help desk/maintenance services as well as associated documentation,
Information Technology staff and end user/teacher training.
- Project
management which is world class and coupled with QDI communications management
system to ensure that all government filing and audit requirements will be fully
satisfied.
